You might have heard about the development of OWA
, the latest-and-greatest resort amusement park in the state opening in the Gulf Shores area this summer. And, yes, it’s a pretty big deal. With over 150,000 square feet of retail, dining, and entertainment space, a 14-acre lake, an amusement park, a water park, and a 90,000 square foot entertainment center, it’s worth more than a quick glance!
Where is OWA?
OWA is located in the little city of Foley, AL, a town just seven miles from the breathtaking white-sand shores of the Gulf Coast and popular towns like Gulf Shores, Orange Beach, and Perdido Key. In addition to the beach, it’s just minutes from the Tanger Outlets and the premier Foley Sports Tourism Complex. The Foley/Orange Beach/Gulf Shores metro area is home to over 950,000 permanent residents, and hosts over 6 million visitors a year.
What You’ll Find in Stage 1 of OWA
The first phase of OWA opens this month, July 21, 2017, and it’s going to be big! The amusement park will feature 21 rides, Gorgeous young woman and man walking along shops holding handsfrom kid-pleasers to screamers like Rollin’ Thunder or the Alabama Wham’a. You’ll also discover a charming Southern-inspired Downtown scene filled with local shops and eateries, as well as big-name retailers and restaurants—including the famous Wahlburgers (yes, it’s owned by the Wahlbergs)!
Additionally, you can stroll miles of scenic pathways through the quaint Town Center or enjoy live music in the Warehouse District. Go for a walk around the 14-acre lake to enjoy a little peace, quiet, and the beauty of nature, or even paddle a boat out on the calm waters. You can even hop on the trolley for a scenic tour. You don’t have to be a thrillseeker to love OWA.
Why Does OWA Matter to Foley, the Gulf Coast, and Alabama?
OWA is the second-largest investment in the state, currently sitting at over $361 million and expected to rise to over $500 million. It’s a joint partnership with the City of Foley, Foley Sports Complex, and the Poarch Band of Creek Indians, with the tribe as the sole owner and developer.
This year alone, the project has hired 621 employees, creating the largest number of new jobs in the state. That’s a pretty big deal. And that number is expected to increase to over 1,000 in the coming years—in addition to boosting the local economy and spending in the city of Foley.
